If you’re going to spend the day out on the water, you should feel secure that all of your belongings will stay nice and dry. Unfortunately, with any old bag, this is not always the case. Regular bags can leak and with so much water around you’re likely to get some wet spots that may be detrimental to what you’ve got inside.
What you need is a proper sup deck bag that is waterproof and sturdy so you don’t have to worry about any of your valuables like you’re phone getting damaged while you’re out. Waterproof deck bags come in so many shapes, sizes, and colors these days that it may seem easiest to simply pick one off of a website and purchase. Not all deck bags are built equal though, so it is important to do your research to make sure you’re investing in the right product.
Something cheap might fall apart, while something expensive may not be all that it is cracked up to be. So how do you choose the right bag for your water excursions? Let’s dive a little deeper to find out.
What to Look For
The most important factors to consider here are the most obvious. If you’re going to be spending money on a product to keep your things safe and dry, the product better be able to deliver on that promise. So what should you look for in product descriptions to ensure you’re getting the right thing?
- Waterproofing: There is no sense in getting a deck bag for your SUP if it isn’t going to be waterproof. The whole point of a deck bag is to make sure your things stay dry. If the bag can’t even do that, then it isn’t worth your time or money.
- Size: You should be aware of how much gear you plan to bring on your paddleboard so you know what size bag to get. There is a wide array of sizes to consider, but make sure whichever one you get can actually accommodate all of your belongings. The wrong size packed too full can actually throw off the weight capacity of your board if you’re not keeping track.
- Durability: Your bag should be able to withstand conditions and even minor snags without tearing. Durability is important because it means that if your bag gets caught on something it isn’t likely to rip and expose your belongings to the elements.
SUP Deck Bag Options
Your deck bag should be fully customized to your tastes and needs. If you carry a lot of gear you’ll need something bigger and sturdier. If you want to show off your personality while carrying your bag on your board, you may want to customize the color as well.
With so many options, there is bound to be one out there that is right for you.

A sup bag is one of the things I take on every trip to make my life easier. The most important thing to remember is to not overfill your bag. These bags can fill up quickly and monitoring their weight and their ability to fasten properly is crucial. Too heavy it can risk toppling your board, and too full can risk that the fasteners can break or come undone and your belongings will be vulnerable.
